To support the overall Education & Outreach mission of the Atlanta Guitar Guild, the Atlanta Guitar Orchestra operates on an all-volunteer basis. The following staff members hold ongoing volunteer leadership positions in the orchestra.

Director of Music- Mary Akerman

Mary Akerman is a former first prize winner in the Guitar Foundation of America competition and is a frequent performer both as a soloist and with the Akerman-Teixeira guitar duo. She is head of the classical guitar program at Kennesaw State University and is president of the Atlanta Guitar Guild, a non-profit guitar society. She has performed/taught/adjudicated at GFA festivals, the Festival de Guitarra Paracho in Paracho, Mexico, the Festival Intrenacional de Guitarra del Noreste in Saltillo, Mexico, the Southwestern Guitar Festival in San Antonio TX, the Classical Minds Festival in Houston, and the East Carolina University Summer Music Workshop, and the Columbus Guitar Symposium. Her education includes guitar studies with John Sutherland at UGA and Bruce Holzman at FSU, as well as masterclasses with Josè Tomàs in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She also performed in the masterclass of Andrès Segovia at the University of Southern California.

Orchestra Conductor- Daniel Foster

 

Daniel is a Music Education and Music Performance major at Reinhardt University. He is currently in his fourth year and has performed with the University bands at the American Bandmaster’sfoster Association in 2014 and at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-State Conference in 2015. Daniel was also a member of the American Patriot Winds and the professional community band, Georgia Wind Symphony as the second principal euphonium player. While he was with the American Patriot Winds, he was a guest conductor in their fall concert. Daniel also competed in the Reinhardt University Conducting Competition and was the runner up in the competition. Currently, Daniel is a free- lance musician on the side in which he gives lessons, performs in various gigs and has taught various master classes.
